The aim of the first meeting is primarily to understand the problem. Do not be armed with a solution from the outset. Gauge how they think community pharmacy can help them. What's their perception of community pharmacy? What is working well, and what can be improved?

Once you have a good idea of the problem the practice is facing, suggest how your pharmacy services can support this. Bring case studies and contacts of lead GPs who have been involved with community pharmacy partnerships.

Before you leave, arrange a follow-up meeting. Email across the minutes of the meeting while it is fresh in your mind and seek clarity on any issues if necessary. Agree on a list of actions with timescales.

Seek permission to be seated at other meetings that may be beneficial. Practices hold multidisciplinary meetings and many have active patient participation groups. They may welcome your input.
