Hounslow Council has started a campaign to raise public awareness of sexual health services in community pharmacies.

The campaign, known as More Than Medicine, coincides with Sexual Health Week which started yesterday and gives the local community information about the confidential support pharmacies provide, such as emergency hormonal contraception, contraceptive pill, free sexual health testing kits and the C-Card scheme, which gives young people access to free condoms and sexual health advice.

The campaign is bolstered by two films featuring young people who go to a pharmacy which Hounslow Council said “challenges perceptions of what pharmacies offer and demonstrate how easy, convenient and confidential it can be for young people to access these services”.

The council is running the campaign alongside Sexual Health Hounslow. Councillor Lily Bath, a cabinet member for health, wellbeing and adult social care at Hounslow Council, said: “Hounslow’s pharmacies are a brilliant resource that offer health and wellbeing services in the heart of our communities.

“It’s important that everyone is aware of what they offer, including free contraception and sexual health services.

“We all remember being young and how awkward those conversations can be, so these videos are a great way to put people’s mind at ease by making clear how easy the process is. They also highlight that these conversations are always confidential.”
