If we want to avoid getting into a cycle between hope and depression, we need to look for little successes and make the most of them, explaining how these are taking us to our goal. The little chink of light needs to be magnified so that when things become difficult they can still feel they are moving forward.

During the confidence stage, we should continue to have a final push, identifying the final steps needed to complete the transition and refocusing again on the goal. We need to continue to focus on the successes to maintain the level of motivation towards the goal. The final stage is one that we often forget.

When we get to the satisfaction stage, we should celebrate our success. This helps us put a full stop after a period of change, moving into a period of stability. Additionally, it helps build confidence and commitment for future periods of change. Different members of the team will go through this process at different speeds.

Some people may spend a long time in the fear and depression stages, but move very quickly from there to the end of the process. For others, the experience might be the exact opposite. We need to treat people as individuals and recognise these different paces of change.
