As a new leader, you can't know everything, but you can demonstrate an appetite to learn about your industry and your organisation. I remember that in my early career, I was like a sponge, soaking up information about the pharmaceutical market, approaches to management, understanding how my company worked, looking to other sectors, appreciating my line manager's leadership style and understanding how to network.

To be a leader you must have this passion. And when challenges come your way €“ and they will, often out of the blue €“ you need to dust yourself down, take note of your position and drive on. This is what a leader does.
