Career Notes: Amanda Smith

Amanda Smith

Who’s influenced you in your career?

Amanda: I suppose the person who’s influenced me most in my career would have to be David Wilkinson. He was my pre-reg tutor at Heath Pharmacy and shaped me into a pharmacist during the two six-month placements I had with him.

My partner Robert is also a pharmacist and he has consistently been a good influence on me. His counselling skills are something I aspire to every time I hear him talking to patients.

I’ve also been influenced by numerous pharmacy people that I’ve seen doing great things on social media. There are too many to mention but their dedication and enthusiasm for community pharmacy inspires me to be better every day.

What has been your best moment as a pharmacist, so far?

This is a hard one to answer. I can’t think of a particular ‘best moment’. There have been lots of good moments, mostly when a patient thanks me for the help or advice I’ve given them, or when a colleague passes a training course that I’ve helped them with.

What are your ambitions for your career?

I want to help community pharmacy to develop its role in the NHS and ensure it has a stable future. I want to be the best pharmacist that I can be.

What’s your most significant job move?

I started working at Heath Pharmacy when I qualified and I’m still there.

What do you get out of bed for each day, professionally?

I love my job! Always have done. Pharmacy, for me, has always just been a perfect fit.

Optimist or pessimist?

Definitely an optimist. Why spend your life feeling miserable?

How do you relax?

I like to read, but mostly I love to bake. I get withdrawal symptoms if I haven’t baked something for a while. Over the past few years I’ve also got more into cake decoration, although that’s not always relaxing!

If you weren’t doing what you do now, what would you do?

I can imagine having a tea room somewhere. I’d be able to bake all sorts of things then, but I’m not sure my waistline could take it.
