Bite prevention

Close windows and doors after sunset. Use door/window insect screens if available.

Sleep under insecticide-impregnated mosquito nets. Try to tuck the net under the mattress and check that there are no tears in the fabric.

Use a DEET-based insect repellent (at least 20%) and consider spraying the room with insecticide or using a plug-in. Public Health England also advocate the use of the following insect repellents: p-menthane 3,8 diol, icaridin, or 3-ethlyaminopropionate (IR3535). Repellent should be applied on top of sunscreen.

Wear clothing that covers most of the body, e.g. long-sleeved tops and trousers to cover the skin - especially after sunset and at dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.

Use a fan or air-conditioning to keep the room cool, as mosquitoes are less active in cooler temperatures.
