Over 50 per cent of all Europeans will be affected by obesity by 2030, according to the World Health Organisation.

Obesity is already responsible for 2 to 8 per cent of health costs and 10 to 13 per cent of deaths in different parts of the region, says WHO.

It is also now the 5th leading cause of death worldwide. According to WHO, obesity is one of the greatest public health challenges of the 21st century and its prevalence has tripled in many countries in Europe since the 1980s.

European Obesity Day will be held on Saturday 21 May.

Details of how to support European Obesity Day and more information on obesity, obesity prevention and treatment, are available at the European Obesity Day website: www.europeanobesityday.eu
