There are many free resources online to extend your understanding of individual and group behaviours that affect team performance. With the core theories of personality and behaviour, leaders can engineer the right conditions for their team to thrive, especially in a stable environment.

Thriving under stress or through changeable times demands a more nuanced understanding of behaviour; paradigms like Positive Intelligence can help you to help your team reach their true potential by anticipating obstacles. Sharing the language and knowledge of saboteurs with your team creates more resilience as well as skills and resources needed to maintain high performance.

Pause to reflect

Choose at least two of the frameworks outlined in this module to explore in greater depth. Research free online tools (see references, below) to identify your preferences and reflect on how that has aided and hindered performance for you. You should take 30 minutes on each framework: 15 minutes to explore it, and 15 minutes to reflect on how it might work with you and your team.

Now, choose one framework to extrapolate for members of your own team – either formally through assessment or through exploring with individuals where they see themselves. Think about how language such as “I often see you with ‘x’ behaviour” might help, as well as demonstrating that you value those elements. Even if you make an incorrect assumption about an individual, the ensuing dialogue opens up a two-way exploration of personality and behaviours that deepens your relationship and trust. This exercise can take 30 minutes per person.
