Male suicide rate highest in 20 years

The male suicide rate in England and Wales in 2019 was the highest since 2000, according to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics.

Males continue to account for around three-quarters of all suicides, with 4,303 deaths in 2019 compared to 1,388 female deaths.

The rate of male suicide deaths increased from 16.2 per 100,000 in 2018 to 16.9 per 100,000 in 2019. Males aged 45-49 were more likely to commit suicide than any other age group, while highest rate among females was for those aged 50-54.

Yorkshire and The Humber region had the highest suicide rate in 2019 of 20.6 per 100,000 while South East increased from 13.5 per 100,000 in 2018 to 16.8 per 100,000.
