University of Sunderland tops league table for MPharm courses

The University of Sunderland’s school of pharmacy has topped the Guardian University Guide’s league table for pharmacy and pharmacology for a second year running.

The MPharm course at Queens University Belfast ranked second, while at the bottom of the table the universities of Leicester and Wolverhampton featured. The table was published on September 13.

The table considers factors like student satisfaction, staff numbers, spending and career prospects.

While the GPhC has not yet revealed the respective pass rates for each university at which MPharm students sat the June 2025 registration assessment, the University of Sunderland – which came 27th in the Guardian’s overall league table for universities –  achieved the fourth-highest pass rate in the 2024 summer assessment with 89 per cent of candidates passing.

Adrian Moore, head of the pharmacy school at the University of Sunderland, said: “For the second year running, to be ranked first in the Guardian University Guide for Pharmacy and Pharmacology is a wonderful achievement.,

“It reflects the enthusiasm, creativity, expertise and commitment of the fantastic team of staff we have and  the incredible support we receive from our external stakeholders in delivering placements and colleagues internally.”

He described it as a “proud moment” for the school and a “testament to the inspiring environment we strive to create every day”.

Mark Burdon, a 1999 Sunderland graduate and chair of the university’s board of governors, said: “Pharmacy is close to my heart, being an alumnus. To sustain the top spot is an excellent achievement; the MPharm course is well established, with over 100 years of pharmacy teaching in Sunderland. Long may that continue.”
