What do we mean by wellbeing?
Wellbeing is about more than workload; it is a multi-dimensional construct and there are many definitions.
People development body CIPD (cipd.co.uk) has published seven interrelated key domains of wellbeing and it provides initiatives that workplaces can adopt to support each domain.
Wellbeing can be viewed as the balance point between an individual’s resource pool and the challenges they face. Stable wellbeing exists when individuals have the psychological, social and physical resources they need to meet a psychological, social and/or physical challenge. When individuals have more challenges than resources, the see-saw dips, along with their wellbeing. So, what are the challenges we might find in pharmacy right now?
Ways to enhance pharmacist wellbeing
Element | Recommendations |
Employer-pharmacist relationships | Prioritise patient safety, quality of care and pharmacist wellbeing when setting workload expectations. Train and sensitise non-pharmacist managers/supervisors about professional requirements |
Emotions are over-reactive | Proactively identify personal stressors, learn self care techniques and consistently apply strategies that address wellbeing and help prevent burnout |
Urgency and hyperactivity | Incorporate ongoing education, self-evaluation and reflection for student pharmacists, pharmacy school staff, preregistration tutors and preregistration graduates on topics of wellbeing, resilience and behavioural health |
Loss of energy | Advocate for research into pharmacist work environments to evaluate aspects that lead to burnout and identify best practices and pursue funding sources to support these efforts |
