What is motivation?

These are two main types of motivation: extrinsic and intrinsic.

  • Extrinsic motivation is based on external factors which encourage team members to perform well. It could include motivators such as pay rises, bonuses or time off
  • Intrinsic motivation is an individual’s desire to overcome challenges and achieve excellence at work, particularly through collaborating with trusted team members.

Different factors will motivate different individuals, so it is essential to understand what drives your team. A motivated individual or team will adapt particularly well to change and bring a positive energy to the workplace.

Fostering an environment that aids individuals to be more extrinsically motivated as well as having personal motivation is important; it revitalises people’s ambitions to meet the team’s common goals, improving performance and profit in turn.

Pause to reflect

Reflect on your employees’ job satisfaction (if you are an employee think about this on a personal level) and think about whether any job satisfaction exists by considering the following:

  • Are there any known causes of job dissatisfaction within the business?
  • If there are any, how can these be eliminated or changed?
  • What are the factors that create job satisfaction amongst the team?
  • How can job satisfaction be improved?

Take time to consider how you or your employees can get maximum job satisfaction at work and the steps you need to take to do this – record any actions you need to take.
