The Royal Pharmaceutical Society has announced the results of the inaugural elections for the three National Pharmacy Advisory Councils that will feed into the Royal College of Pharmacy when it is established in April.
The council members will be tasked with developing policy, supporting professional development and engaging with members at the royal college.
There are eight places on the national advisory council for England, six on the Welsh council and five on the Scottish council. The Scottish council members were all elected unopposed and so no election was required.
A total of 16,994 ballots were issued to RPS members in England, where there was a turnout of 11.1 per cent.
In Wales, 1,225 ballots were issued and 222 individuals voted, making for a turnout of 18.1 per cent.
In England, just one out of eight places went to a community pharmacy representative: Claire Nevinson, superintendent pharmacist at Boots.
There are two community pharmacists on the Welsh council and one on the Scottish council.
Ms Nevinson told P3pharmacy: "I’m delighted to be elected to join the Royal College of Pharmacy’s National Pharmacy Advisory Council for England.
“I look forward to bringing a strong commitment to patient safety, whilst evolving pharmacy practice to meet the changing needs of communities.
“Thank you for those who have put their belief in me to help ensure our profession is best equipped for the future."
RPS chief executive Paul Bennett said: “My sincere thanks go to all the candidates who put themselves forward this year and for the time and dedication they invested.
“Their enthusiasm, leadership and passion reflect their commitment to building an ambitious and confident royal college that benefits both professionals and patients.
“I extend a warm welcome to our newly elected council members as we take this important step towards building an inclusive and influential royal college for pharmacy.
“I’d also like to thank everyone who voted. The contributions of new and continuing elected members will be crucial to the success and effectiveness of the new Royal College of Pharmacy, so that it can deliver on the high expectations and ambitions we all share.”
