October will see the launch of Alphega Pharmacy's 'Growing Healthy' programme to help families tackle childhood obesity and prevent its short-term and long-term health consequences. The campaign, which will be piloted in six pharmacies before an expected chain-wide roll out in 2017, will look at how families can introduce healthy behaviours in everyday life that can have a positive influence on weight.
While Growing Healthy is aimed primarily at familes who have overweight children, it will be suitable for any family with a child aged between four and 12. Families will be able to attend their local pharmacy for up to 12 consultations, at times that suit them, over a six-month period.
The programme uses interactive, child-focused activities, such as card games and jigsaws, to get the whole family involved. In addition, pharmacists will use motivational interviewing techniques to help children recognise unhealthy habits and replace them with healthier alternatives.Â
