Community pharmacy income from the global sum has been cut by at least 6 per cent from October 2016. DH says that, as a core part of primary care, community pharmacy must contribute to NHS cost savings.

Chief pharmaceutical officer, Keith Ridge, said that the global sum which is currently £2.8 billion, would be no higher than £2.63 billion for 2016/2017. Pharmacy bodies have been invited to enter talks with DH.

This is part of the NHS’s need to deliver £22 billion in efficiency savings by 2020/21. The Five Year Forward View describes a need for greater efficiency and productivity across health services.

Will we see pharmacy closures in the future? 40 per cent of pharmacies are in a cluster where there are three or more pharmacies within ten minutes’ walk, said the DH in it’s open letter to pharmacy.
