TOPICAL PAIN RELIEF: REFRESH

Traditionally, OTC topical pain relief for joint pain has been based on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and diclofenac. They are available in a variety of strengths and formats such as creams, gels or patches. While these can be effective, they can also be associated with side effects and may not be appropriate for all customer groups due to interactions with other medications.

Other options include deep heat rubs and freeze sprays, as well as applying hot/cold packs to the area, although there is limited evidence of their effectiveness in managing osteoarthritis joint pain.1

Topical pain relief is sometimes preferred to oral pain relief as customers believe it provides localised, targeted action.
