Health advice for Hajj 2016

With Eid around the corner, travellers to the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca have been reminded to check the health requirements for their visit and to see a health professional to discuss appropriate travel advice. It is currently expected that Eid will begin on Sunday 11 September, though the date will be confirmed on 1 September.

Each year, around three million from people around the world gather in Mecca to celebrate the holy festival, and these large numbers can entail a high risk of disease spreading.

The Foreign Office advises that colds, flu and respiratory problems are very common in the region and are especially prevalent during Hajj and Umra. Those attending are advised to bring basic medicines with them and ensure they consume enough liquids and salts.

Anyone travelling to Saudi Arabia is advised to visit a health professional at least four to six weeks before their trip and to take any precautionary steps that may be necessary, such as vaccinations.
