GPs need to give patients free choice of pharmacy, says NHS England

NHS England has written to GP practices asking that they ‘prominently’ display a poster informing patients of their right to choose their dispensing pharmacy.

In the letter, head of primary care Dr David Geddes said that NHS England was ‘concerned’ that practices are ’seeking to influence inappropriately which pharmacy dispenses a patient’s medicines’.

“We are pleased that NHS England has finally taken this action, demonstrating that they are aware of the scale and seriousness of the issue with prescription direction. Most pharmacies and medical practices already ensure that patients’ rights to choose where to access pharmacy services are protected, but it is vital that the small numbers who do not are tackled,” said Elizabeth Wade, director of policy at Pharmacy Voice.

NHS England has created posters for GP practices and dispensing practices with the message: ‘You have the right to collect medicines that have been prescribed for you from any pharmacy you choose.’

’Your choice should not be influenced by letters you receive in the post, or by any doctor or pharmacist.

’Please contact NHS England if someone is trying to influence your decision on which pharmacy you would like to use.’

Ms Wade said that stronger, more forceful action is needed but that measures are taking ‘too long to emerge.’

“Without this essential local pharmacies may be placed under threat, endangering patient access and continuity of care, and impacting on other healthcare services,” added Ms Wade.
