Diabetes programme will ease NHS burden

The national diabetes prevention programme will help ease the workload of GPs treating children and adults with diabetes and it will provide high quality local services for GPs to refer patients to, according to Dr Matt Kearney, national clinical advisor to NHS England and Public Health England.

The national diabetes prevention programme was first announced in January. There are seven ‘demonstrator’ sites in the UK that are testing how to pinpoint patients who are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes through schemes such as the NHS health check. The sites will also be trialling schemes such as weight loss, physical activity, cooking, nutrition and peer support.
