LloydsPharmacy has now tested over 10,000 patients since the NHS launched its Healthier You: Diabetes Prevention Programme in 2016.
The service is run through GP referral, offering free diabetes screening through participating pharmacies to patients deemed at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes and then helps them make necessary lifestyle changes. Evidence shows that behavioural interventions that help people to better manage their weight and get more active can significantly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Deep Patel, NHS excellence manager at LloydsPharmacy’s parent company Celesio UK, says: “Type 2 diabetes is a really critical issue for the NHS and as obesity continues to rise, the cost of treatment is becoming a burden on our already stretched health service. It’s so important that we educate people about how their lifestyle can seriously impact their health. This prevention programme has been hugely successful in starting that conversation about changing their behaviour.”
