A group of Boots pharmacists has launched a legal challenge, with the backing of the Pharmacists’ Defence Association Union (PDAU), in a bid to secure independent representation over working conditions at the UK’ s largest pharmacy chain.
A court application was made on Friday (July 28) to ’derecognise’ the Boots Pharmacists Association, currently the only route open to pharmacists at the company to negotiate terms and conditions of employment under present legislation. The application is “truly historic and ground breaking under trade union law,” according to the PDAU.
John Murphy, general secretary of the PDAU, said: “It is unfathomable that Boots [has been] so determined to deny an independent voice to the thousands of pharmacists that it employs.”
The individuals taking this action are representative of many thousands of Boots pharmacists who have been frustrated by their employer’s actions, he continued. “We are delighted to be able to support their case.”
The PDAU wants an agreement with the retailer to allow it to negotiate formally on behalf of Boots pharmacists to enhance and secure its members’ working conditions. “We want to work with Boots to ensure those things become a reality for all its pharmacists,” said Mr Murphy.
