NPA issues radicalisation guidance

The National Pharmacy Association has issued new guidance to its members on radicalisation, describing ways in which radicalisers may target vulnerable individuals and how pharmacy team members can raise any concerns.

In an email to superintendent pharmacists that also stressed the seriousness of inappropriate sexual behaviour in the workplace, the NPA cited high profile cases of radicalisation including a pharmacist who, along with their partner, was recently found guilty of plotting a terror attack in the UK.

The NPA guidance document sets out the legal definitions of terrorism and radicalisation and lists some potential indications that someone may be vulnerable to radicalisation, such as accessing websites with extremist content. It also offers advice on raising concerns, with team members advised to speak to a line manager in the first instance. In order to escalate concerns or seek further guidance, team members are advised to approach national bodies such as NHS Prevent leads.

An NPA spokesman said: “We have issued guidance on radicalisation and inappropriate sexual behaviour, because these are matters of current concern in society and pharmacies are a reflection of society. As a responsible trade and professional association, we feel that it is appropriate to draw our members’ attention to relevant official guidance.”
