May in numbers

20%

The UK has seen a 20% fall in the incidence of dementia over the past two decades, according to new research published by the University of Cambridge. The study suggests that the change has been seen mainly in men, but there are still approximately 210,000 new cases of dementia per year in the UK.

16%

The increasing level of patients during a period of low recruitment within general practice runs the risk of reaching saturation point among GPs. A new study revealed GPs’ workload has increased by 16% between 2007 and 2014, with the growing numbers of patients contributing to the issue.

18 weeks

According to figures released by a Freedom of Information request by BBC Breakfast, average wait times for eating disorder treatments can vary hugely. In the trusts examined, 1,576 people waited 18 weeks to see a specialist, 742 people waited 26 weeks for treatment and almost 100 people waited an entire year.

16,415

There were 16,415 excess deaths last winter, with flu thought to be a major factor. The number of excess winter deaths in England and Wales was so high that it has lowered statistical life expectancy for girls born this year by two months and boys by three months, the first fall in two decades.
