GPhC invites views on quality in pharmacy

The General Pharmaceutical Council has launched the first of two online workshops to better understand the views of pharmacy professionals and pharmacy owners on quality in pharmacy practice and services.

The workshops will focus on three key elements of quality – safety, effectiveness and patient experience. These will be explored through conversations with those involved in the delivery or oversight of pharmacy services – including pharmacy professionals, pharmacy owners and other stakeholders.

The first online workshop runs from 17 January to 31 January. After each workshop concludes, the GPhC will analyse and reflect on the feedback and share key findings with stakeholders to help inform how they support and promote professionalism and quality in pharmacy service.

The GPhC will then speak to patients and pharmacy service users to learn about what quality care means to them, and whether this differs from the views of pharmacy professionals and owners. The GPhC says it aims to “validate and develop these views, so that challenges to quality are understood from different perspectives”.

GPhC chief executive Duncan Rudkin said: “This discussion on what quality means in pharmacy is particularly important at a time when there are growing expectations of how pharmacy can support people’s health and well-being, and whe pharmacy professionals are reporting they are experiencing pressures that could potentially affect the quality of care they provide.”

“Our goal in this programme of work is to increase our and others’ understanding of what quality means in pharmacy; what issues or pressures impact the delivery of quality service; and how we can work with pharmacy professionals, pharmacy organisations and other stakeholders to provide assurance to patients and the public and enable improvement in the quality of services.”

All pharmacy professionals, pharmacy owners, and those who attended the GPhC’s 2016 professionalism under pressure seminar, will be invited via email to take part in the online workshop. Other stakeholders who wish to contribute may email chief.executive@pharmacyregulation.org to request an invitation to participate.
